Split, Croatia

On Thursday, April twentyfirst, after authorizing Dad to give Wendy a link to a video we made for her birthday, and after making arrangements to check in after Dad's nephrectomy the next day, our family left for an Easter holiday in the Balkans. Much of our travels would be on the Dalmatian Coast of the Adriatic Sea. Our itinerary included a night in Split, Croatia; a night in Kotor, Montenegro; two nights in Dubrovnik, Croatia; and a final night in Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our travels included much sun and steps and fantastical greens and blues.

Split was one of my favorite destinations this year, along with perhaps Ljubljana, Salzburg and Eger. Surrounded by mountains and the azalea blue of the Mediterranean, the old city is comprised within the walls of Diocletian's palace, a double duty of beauty and time. A nighttime walk by myself up the Marjan hill along the Riva promenade promised runs I never took and views I never saw, contributing to a boundless feeling. The girls, meanwhile, loved our apartment and lemonades over the water and the beach, and Sophie and Amelia were delighted by the climb up the city's signature bell tower on the Cathedral of St. Duje.

In the outdoor market, women sold rabbits, chicks and ducks for Easter. The chicks chirped and cuddled together in boxes while we looked on.
